چکیده

With the majority of United States Department Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS)-sponsored earthen dams exceeding their planned service life, seepage is a concern since it common failure mechanism among as whole. Seepage occurs when water penetrates hydraulic barrier to create open pathways, channels, or piping leading internal erosion stability issues due increased effective stress. Due complex geometries these structures, time-dependent boundary conditions, and complicated analyses, numerical approaches have been used estimate seepage. However, existing models are either computationally expensive assume steady-state conditions. This work develops framework for using transient thermal finite element analysis (FEA) model an analogy predict The FEA compared analytical verify approach. A sensitivity shows that time aspect flow dependent on medium, i.e., soil, not fluid properties.

Thermal Stress Analysis of a Dam Wall by Finite Element Model

Arch dams are designed for the same loads as other dams with the exception of the temperature load, which has a significant influence in arch dam design as compared to gravity dam design. In concrete arch dams, because of the particular geometry, solar radiation shares of exposed surfaces vary spatially through downstream face. In this case, threedimensional temperature distribution analysis is...

Failure Prediction during uniaxial Superplastic Tension using Finite Element Method

Superplastic materials show a very high ductility. This is due to both peculiar process conditions and material intrinsic characteristics. However, a number of superplastic materials are subjected to cavitation during superplastic deformation. Evidently, extensive cavitation imposes significant limitations on their commercial application. The deformation and failure of superplastic sheet metals...

Accuracy and Time Resolution in Thermal Transient Finite Element Analysis

For reasonable accuracy in thermal transient FEA, two related, but distinct, goals must be simultaneously attained: (1) the mesh must have sufficient intrinsic temporal and spatial resolution for the problem of interest; (2) the time steps must be sized to yield proper mathematical transient behavior for that mesh. If the distinction between these needs is not fully grasped, or either point sim...

Transient Fluid Flow Modeling in Fractured Aquifer of Sechahoon Iron Mine Using Finite Element Method

Considering the fact that a large volume of iron reserve in the Sechahoon Iron Mine in Yazd Province has located under the water table, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on water flow within the pit and its surroundings. The conceptual model of the aquifer was created using surface and underground geological information compared with water table data of the area of interest. In t...
